price: $7 recommended
links: DUMBO Art Expo

After last month's event high up in the cavernous Jay St lofts, the Expo comes down to the storefronts of Main St with an even bigger list of up-and-coming local artists. A brewery, a winery, and a few restaurants are donating some flavor while live musicians and DJs provide an aural backdrop for the art market. All exhibited work is for sale, and 25% of all proceeds will be donated to the DUMBO Neighborhood Association. (CH)

MUSIC
Juan Carlos Formell

when: Tue 6.4 (7:30pm & 9:30pm)
where: The Jazz Standard (116 E 27th St, 212.576.2232)
price: $12
links: The Jazz Standard

The son of Cuba's most famous bandleader, Juan Carlos Formell comes by his virtuosity naturally. Today marks the release of Las Calles del Paraiso, the follow-up to his Grammy-nominated Songs From a Little Blue House. Expect lilting, rhythmically complex songs that evoke a tropical idyll that oftentimes veils tougher issues. Formell is a defector from Cuba and outspoken on Castro's regime — so don't be surprised if a taste of politics gets mixed in with the music. (PS)

Alto sax and sampling sorcerer Dave Binney is reassembling his jazz group, Lan Xang, for an intimate night at the 55 Bar. This formidable talent pool — Scott Colley on bass, Donny McCaslin on tenor sax, and Kenny Wollesen on drums — works its magic by painting dense sonic illusions of mysterious landscapes, fields of wildflowers, and majestic temples... something Binney fans have been waiting on for quite some time. (JM)

The 4th show a series of four, for this event the food is finally unpacked from the trucks. A "dig in" kind of show, the organizers encourage viewers to participate and create public artworks of their own. So take this rare opportunity to visit the caverous cells of the meat-packing district and get cultured with food. (MB)

FESTIVAL
14th Annual New York Lesbian & Gay Film Festival

when: Thur 6.6 - Sun 6.16
where: Various locations (646.418.8726)

Kicking off with the world premiere of Margaret Cho's latest in-your-face concert film, The Notorious C.H.O., the New Festival's eleven-day celebration of gay and lesbian cinema features a great number of world, U.S., and local premieres of documentary and dramatic features and shorts. Two documentaries worth noting are The Cockettes, a Sundance favorite about a ragtag troupe of drag performers, and Lifetime Guarantee: Phranc's Adventures in Plastics, about Phranc, a lesbian musician turned butch Tupperware lady. (MB)

Oris Jay & Jay Da Flex

when: Thur 6.6 (10pm)
where: Baktun (418 W 14th St, 212.206.1590)

links: Oris Jay | Jay Da Flex | Baktun

Tonight, the London underground kicks it up a notch with scads of messy breaks and booming, bottom-heavy beats. Sheffield-based Oris Jay is the man behind the curtain at the infamously mangled Forward party at the Velvet Rooms in London. His recent single, "Trippin'," is a marvelously-spliced array of broken-bottle vocals and malicious grooves — an explosive melange of garage, jungle, and lights-out breaks. Oris is accompanied by Jay Da Flex of the razor-sharp Ghost crew. Flex maxes out the heady 2-step flava while the bass pirouettes and the BPM keeps it swingin'. (JS)

Is there a New York underground scene? The most thought-provoking answer will win a pair of comp'd guest list spots to this party.

JAZZ
Bill Frisell: Mysterio Simpatico

when: Fri 6.7 & Sat 6.8 (8pm)
where: St Ann's Warehouse (38 Water St, Bklyn, 718.858.2424)
price: $30 (reserve in advance)
links: Bill Frisell | St. Ann's

Guitarist Bill Frisell has become one of the most widely respected and elevated composers in jazz over the last few decades. Lately, his explorations into Americana have involved a heavy use of traditional country and folk idioms. This trio's performance — with Ron Miles on trumpet and Jenny Scheinman on violin — will be very much along those lines. The music has been composed to accompany a projected visual montage of Jim Woodring's charcoal drawings, animations, and collages. The event offers a mature and meditative musical and visual experience. (JM)

Who is a great American composer and why? The best two answers will win a pair of tickets to this show.

MULTIMEDIA
Augenblick's "Nine Circles of Hell"

when: Fri 6.7 & Sat 6.8 (9pm)
where: 12-turn-13 (172 Classon Ave, Bklyn, 718.768.3742)
price: $10
links: Augenblick

The eccentric Augenblick collective hits Brooklyn again with their most ambitious "organized chaos" event yet: a recreation of Dante's Inferno. Performance artists, actors, musicians, visualists, poets, DJs, designers, and other creatives offer two options to reach hell: Take the Trip to Hell, an ambulatory, multi-site experience starting at Union Square (SW subway entrance, 9pm sharp) that winds a path to the second option, the party itself, Straight To Hell. Audience members will be absorbed into the melιe through interactive moments where divine mischief and contorted reality blend, and wanton action ensues. Be prepared for impish behavior — from others and yourself. (SR)

Define hell. The best answer wins a pair of guest list spots to this event.

FESTIVAL
Kaiju Big Battel

when: Fri 6.7 (9pm)
where: Warsaw (261 Driggs Ave, Bklyn, 718.387.5252)
price: $12
links: Kaiju | Warsaw

Billed as a sanctioned arena where Kaiju monsters can resolve their differences while entertaining (without needlessly destroying) humans, a full-scale "Big Battel" is finally coming to NYC. Tonight, Warsaw will hold 20+ monsters (costumed freaks), 15 blocks of crushable cityscape, and a reinforced "Kaiju Danger Cage" featuring fights between Gomi-Man, Club Sandwich, the evil Dr. Cube, and many others. Imaginatively mixing conventions from Sunday monster matinees and pro-wrestling, the word is that this rampaging East/West phenomenon is as fun as it sounds. Indie-rockers Enon will kick off the event to celebrate the release of their latest CD, High Society. (CH)

If you were a wrestler what would your name be and why? The two most convincing answers will win a pair of guest list spots to this event.

SPORTS
New York Mini (Women's 10k)

when: Sat 6.8 (9am)
where: Central Park (CPW & W 61st St, 212.423.2207)
price: $20 / $14 members
links: New York Mini

Ladies (only), strap on your shoes and join the field in the 30th running of the New York Mini. The race coincides with the 30th anniversary of Title IX, which established equal funding for girls' and women's sports programs that receive federal aid. The Mini is a benefit for the New York Road Runners Foundation, which establishes community-based running programs for schoolchildren lacking proper Phys Ed classes. All this and a $10,000 top prize for the winner. (PS)

MUSIC
Three Farms

when: Sat 6.8 (2pm-6pm)
where: East River Amphitheater
(E River btwn Grand and Canal)
price:  FREE

It's been some 30 years since the amphitheater in East River Park was used for anything other than a squatters' haven or as a backdrop for scenes in hip hop's cult-classic film, Wildstyle. Following 9/11, a reality-based TV show Rebuild America designated the amphitheater for renovations. Six days and $6 million later, NYC was awarded a fantastic new outdoor venue. Arlene Grocery and Lower Eastside Business Improvement District gets first crack at this soon-to-be summertime favorite spot, hosting a local (way) underground rock n' roll lineup featuring The Damnwells, Skyrocket, Le Sans Culottes, Lesion, and The Everyothers. (SL)

FILM
Christine Vachon & Killer Films

when: Sat 6.8 & Sun 6.9 (various times)
where: American Museum of the Moving Image (35 Ave & 36 St, Astoria, 718.784.0077)
price: $8.50
links: American Museum of the Moving Image

Indie producer Christine Vachon, a driving force behind Killer Films, is responsible for propelling brave and daring cinema into the mainstream. This weekend, the American Museum of the Moving Image celebrates her and her company with a retrospective of projects that she helped bring to fruition. Screening highlights include I Shot Andy Warhol, Boys Don't Cry, and the wonderfully disturbing Happiness. There are also two shorts programs featuring rarely seen films by Todd Haynes (Velvet Goldmine) and a spoof on Davey and Goliath by Mary Hestand. Most screenings are followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker. Don't miss this opportunity to to get re-aquainted with some great indie classics. (MB)

MUSIC
Hudson River Rocks

when: Sun 6.9 (5pm)
where: Hudson River Park (Pier 54 @ 13th St)
price:  FREE

Expect to do some serious rump-shaking with Venezuela's Los Amigos Invisibles who mixes funky house music grooves with the joys of salsa. "Bruja," their new dance track with Masters at Work, has been spinning overtime on DJs' playlists since WMC in Miami. Not to be outdone, Thunderball will be bringing out your inner mojo if their latest release is any indication. Scorpio Rising blends soulful trip-hop, latin rock guitars, and check this... sitars. Add the cool breeze coming off the Hudson and this show will be heaven. DJ Angola from the Antibalas crew and the Rummies open the event. (SC)

Note: Thunderball spins at Tribeca Grand on Sat 6.8 (10pm).

PERFORMANCE
Broadway Stars Under the Stars

when: Mon 6.10 (dusk)
where: Bryant Park (42nd St & 6th Ave, 212.484.1222)
price:  FREE
links: Bryant Park

There's no need to queue up for theatre seats tonight, as the best of Broadway will be out in the open air of Bryant Park to kick off the summer outdoor music season. Conceived as a "musical valentine" to NYC, events will focus on our city's classic musicals (such as Guys and Dolls and West Side Story) and composers (including Richard Rodgers and George Gershwin). For those turned off by the bright lights and big tickets of Broadway, this is your chance to catch the highlights (sans extravagant set pieces) for free. But don't get too excited by the title, because as Lou Reed sings, "There are no stars in a New York sky... they're all on the ground." (SC)

ART
Black Romantic

when: Now through 6.23 (times)
where: The Studio Museum in Harlem
(144 W 125th St, 212.864.4500)
price: $5 / $3 students
links: Studio Museum in Harlem

This collective exhibition contains the paintings and drawings of 30 African-American artists from across the country who, until now, have remained outside the purview of "mainstream" museums and galleries. The exhibition, which has its roots in social and figurative realism, does a superb job of representing its subjects in contemporary scenes and settings. The collection is also diverse enough to offer a poignant examination of African American images of rage, humility, hope, and pain. The curator, Thelma Golden, deserves props for compiling a show which defies stereotypes, yet reflects how African Americans see themselves at their best — and worst. (DR)

ART
David Bowie: Site + Sound

when: Fri 6.7 - Sun 9.15 (times)
where: Museum of Television & Radio
(25 W 52nd St, 212.621.6800)
price: $6
links: Museum of Television & Radio

If anyone deserves celebrating, it's the master of re-invention, David Bowie. Commemorating the 30th Anniversary of glam classic The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, the Museum of Television & Radio has put together a retrospective of Bowie's seismic career. The exhibition, broken out by time period, includes more than 50 music videos as well as rarely-seen performances, outtakes, and interviews, some of which are from Bowie's personal library. Let's hope this show represents only the first part of a continuing career. (MB)

What was Bowie's best look? Best three answers will win a pair of tickets to this exhibition.

MUSIC: Upcoming
George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic

when: Thur 6.27 & Fri 6.28 (8pm)
where: Apollo Theater (253 W 125th St, 212.531.5300)
price: $38 / $48
links: P Funk | Apollo Theater | JVC Jazz Festival

Funkateers get ready... the real Mr. Clinton is coming to Harlem. The grand pooba of all funk masters, George Clinton, is responsible for P Funk's immortal soul sensations such as "One Nation Under A Groove," "Flashlight," and "Aqua Boogie." This is a heads-up for a cosmic opportunity that will likely sell out. That way you can beam up to the Mothership and get up for the down stroke. How can you beat P Funk at the Apollo? We are at a loss for words. (JM)

CD REVIEW: Coldcut, Journeys By DJ: 70 Minutes of Madness
Journeys By DJ
Re-released May 2002 (originally released in late 1995)
$15 (Amazon)

While most mixed CDs become dated almost overnight, there are the rare few that stand the test of time. The British duo Coldcut dropped Journeys By DJ: 70 Minutes of Madness in 1995 and it was instantly recognized as a classic. Long out-of-print and just recently reissued, 70 Minutes may truly be the best mixed CD ever. Nimbly crisscrossing genres from hip hop and drum 'n bass to acid house and techno, Coldcut's album is the missing link between the '80s cut 'n paste style of Grandmaster Flash and MARRS and today's mash-up bootlegging. The rapid-fire pace of Coldcut's inspired musical juxtapositions will leave you dizzy. (DJP)

What was the first album Journeys by DJ released after relocating to NYC from London — the first five to tell us will win a copy of this CD.

SPIRITUALITY: Open Center
By now it's abundantly obvious that we think NYC is a wonderful place, but good old gotham can also be a stress-filled pressure cooker. There is hope though, in the Open Center — the country's largest holistic learning center, boasting over 600 programs annually on society, spirit, psyche, body, and the arts - all located in heart of downtown on Spring and Broadway. Whether it's Feng Shui design classes, introduction to belly dancing, or Thai yoga bodywork, the Open Center provides all a valuable outlet for balance within this crazy city that we love so much. Everyone together now — Ohmm, ohmm....

STREAMS: Groovetech
Our usually reliable pals at Groovetech have taken some two day holiday called Jubilee Day and forgot to send us our weekly streams. Being a proactive bunch, we jumped on their site and took a chance with three DJ sets that we know little about. If they're slammin', we'll take the credit — if they're wack then it's all the fault of those bloody, queen-loving friends on holiday!

House: Home Cookin'  (DJ Diz, DJ Wesley Holmes & Ken Wallace)
Drum n' Bass: Therapy with Needles   (DJ Takuya)
Rare Grooves: Revival  (Lo-Ki )
