If you're hunkering down in the city for the holidays, you needn't scratch your head about what to do. Even if you're X-empting yourself from tree-centered festivities come Saturday, there's always Chinese food and a movie, or imports from SF. Plus, for those of you who just can't wait for 2005, we've assembled a preview of the best New Year's Eve happenings. Make a resolution early: get out more, and spread it...

DJ
Bastard Jazz Holiday Scratch

when: Tue 12.21 (9pm)
where: Upstairs at the Leopard Lounge (248 E 5th St, 212.253.2222)
price:  FREE
links: Event Info

Assembling a mélange of selectors from the left-of-center jazz scene, the Bastard Jazz crew is putting a little scratched-up soul into this feverishly festive season. Tonight's event features a live breaks, beats, and funk performance from Turntables on the Hudson's Zeb, with TreeLow playing flute over it all. Residents DJ DRM, Jugoe, and Sema4 are also on hand to drop dancehall dub plates, grooves, and assorted riddims; and as an early Christmas gift, there are free copies of the latest issue of RE:UP — one of the best-designed, well-written mags documenting the scene at the moment — as well as vinyl and CD giveaways. (CJN)

Who were the two artists on Bastard Jazz Recordings fifth release? The first ten correct answers each win a 12" record from the label.

DJ
Magda w/ DJ Movement and DJ Spinoza

when: Wed 12.22 (9pm)
where: Subtonic (107 Norfolk St, 212.358.7501)
price: $5
links: Event Info

Born in Poland, reared in Texas and Detroit, and all grown up in NYC and Berlin, abstract mini-tech demigoddess Magda knows what it's like to simultaneously feel at home yet displaced — at least that's what her sets suggest. Spinning click tracks with irregular rhythms and asymmetrical melodies, Magda's record selection screams "outsider" — but she pieces all the weird blips and cracks together with a groove so thick that the process takes a back seat to danceability. Resident DJs Spinoza and Movement get the party started. (JAC)

MULTIMEDIA
Chaos & Candy III: The Royal Court of Christmas

when: Wed 12.22 (9pm)
where: Deitch Projects Brooklyn (110 N 1st St, 212.343.7300)
price: $10
links: Event Info

'Twas three nights before Christmas and all throughout Deitch, hipsters were dancing wearing elf costumes and tights. Adam Dugas, the event's creator/producer/star, promises to return Christmas to its debased pagan origins. Fending off Hallmark co-optation with an arsenal of cocktails, a "petting zoo," and an impregnable lifesize Gingerbread Village, Chaos & Candy overloads the senses with Rimbaudian abandon. Casey Spooner, the latter half of art band Fischerspooner; Jason Sellards, of the Scissor Sisters; and, of course, Adam Dugas performs backed by a seven-piece electric orchestra. For the finale, the Cracked Nut Dancers update Tchaikovsky with typical downtown irreverence. (JS)

DJ
12's feat. Neil Aline w/ Marques Wyatt

when: Wed 12.22 (10pm)
where: Table 50 (643 Broadway, 212.253.2560)
price: $8
links: Marques Wyatt

To kick off their new deep house monthly, 12's, Table 50 has made a perfect match of East and West Coast counterparts. A major player in the Big Apple ever since his late-'90s days jockeying the BPM radio show on WNYU, Chez Music label founder Neil Aline has gained a reputation for consistently high quality output. Marques Wyatt, meanwhile, is both founder and resident DJ of LA's weekly Deep parties, as well the man behind fantastic mixes and productions for OM; a Cali house standard bearer for well over a decade, he only grows better with time. Together, they're turning things up higher than ever — all the way to 12. (DM)

What group was Marques Wyatt in along with Jay-J? The first correct answer wins a pair of tickets to this event.

MUSIC
Nublu Holiday Party feat. Kudu, Brazilian Girls, Wax Poetic, and DJ Hardedge

when: Wed 12.22 (11pm)
where: Joe's Pub (425 Lafayette St, 212.539.8778)
price: $15
links: Event Info | Nublu | Kudu | Brazilian Girls | Wax Poetic

Nublu opens up the exchange between electronic-based music and trained jazz musicians, cultivating acts such as Kudu, the truly dynamic duo of vocalist/bassist Sylvia Gordon and mad beat-maker Deantoni Parks, whose frenetic live drumming drives their sound. The Brazilian Girls offer sensual electro-lounge with tropical rhythms and hypnotic vocals, and house band Wax Poetic holds down the nu-jazz scene while making an international name with remixes featuring Norah Jones. With this well-balanced lineup, Nublu proves that new sounds don't have to be made from scratch. (CN)

Tell us a story about an artist that you discovered at Nublu. Our favorite tale wins a pair of tickets to this show.

MUSIC
Roy Ayers

when: Thur 12.23 (7:30 & 9:30pm)
where: Joe's Pub (425 Lafayette St, 212.539.8778)
price: $25
links: Event Info | Roy Ayers

Roy Ayers is America's premier living vibraphone player. His career spans four decades and embraces jazz, funk, acid jazz, world beat, and since the advent of sampling, hip-hop. His classic recordings include the soundtrack to Pam Grier's 1973 film Coffy, two albums with Fela Kuti (with whom he founded Uno Melodic Records), and a guest spot on Guru's '93 classic, Jazzmatazz. This show at Joe's Pub is a treat for New Yorkers before Ayers and his band return to London's legendary Jazz Café for their traditional New Year's Eve blowout. (BB)

What was the first release by Uno Melodic Records? The third correct answer wins a pair of tickets to the 7:30pm show.

PERFORMANCE
What I Like About Jew

when: Thur 12.23 - Sat 12.25 (schedule)
where: Knitting Factory (74 Leonard St, 212.219.3132)
price: $14 / $12 advance
links: What I Like About Jew

Celebrating Christmas just isn't kosher, which is why What I Like About Jew returns to the Knitting Factory every year to save the chosen ones from straying into Xmas affairs. Hosted by musical comedy duo Sean Altman and Rob Tannenbaum — best known for such hits as "Hanukkah with Monica" (guess which Monica) and the now dated-sounding "A Jew in the White House (The Ballad of Joe Lieberman)" — the variety show takes an irreverent approach to celebrating/ lambasting Judaism in song. Over the three-night stand, special guests include Screw magazine founder Al Goldstein, Tammy Faye Starlite, Cindy Kaplan, and Eric Schwartz — father of the recent Hanukkah rip on "Hey Ya." (JKG)

Note: This show has a one drink minimum.

MUSIC
Sex Mob Holiday Spectacular w/ Roswell Rudd

when: Thur 12.23 (8 & 10pm)
where: Tonic (107 Norfolk St, 212.358.7501)
price: $15
links: Event Info | Sex Mob | Roswell Rudd

Sex Mob make party music, and 'tis the season for jazz's most erudite pranksters to stage their Holiday Spectacular, directing a merry sonic assault upon classic Christmas tunes and Jewish standards. Upping the ante, Mob boss Steven Bernstein brings along free jazz trombone titan Roswell Rudd (of Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, among other credentials), whom Bernstein calls the band's "original inspiration," as well as other special guests. For all you secularists, there'll be plenty of original Sex Mob fare as well, no doubt drawing heavily from their grimy '03 release, Dime Grind Palace. (CL)

What was Roswell Rudd's first instrument? The sixth correct answer wins a pair of tickets to this event.

FILM
The Woodsman

when: Opens Fri 12.24
where: Various locations
price: Various
links: The Woodsman | Tickets

Based on the play of the same name, The Woodsman is a thoughtful and gripping look at one man's struggle to exorcise his demons. Kevin Bacon gives an intense yet sober performance as Walter, a man trying to reassemble his life after 12 years in prison. He finds an apartment, a job, and a friend in Vickie, who's played by Bacon's real-life partner, Kyra Sedgwick. But Walter's past begins to plague him as a detective who believes he's lapsed back to his old, debased behavior comes calling. An affective work from first-time director Nicole Kassell, The Woodsman translates successfully from stage to screen. (MB)

DJ
Soul Search w/ DJ Spinna

when: Fri 12.24 (10pm)
where: Pepper's Lounge (95 Leonard St, 212.591.2040)
price: $15 / $10 w/ flyer or RSVP
links: Event Info | DJ Spinna

Ever since his underground hip-hop classic, Heavy Beats Vol. 1, DJ Spinna has had a fervent fan base and a wide range of muses, including Bob Marley, Pharoahe Monch, Japanese artist Shina Jupei, and Talib Kweli. Tonight, Spinna transforms a quiet holiday weeknight into a thumping beat revival featuring classic hip-hop, R&B, afro-beat, and (you guessed it) soul. Whether you've been naughty or nice, Christmas comes early this Eve-ning, with Stax stocking stuffers for all. (FAY)

FILM
Chinese Food and a Movie: Stiller, Brooks, and All-You-Can-Eat Chinese on Christmas Day

when: Sat 12.25 (7:30pm)
where: Makor (35 W 67th St, 212.415.5500)
price: $30
links: Event Info

On this, the second most awkward day of the year for Jews, there's no tradition more hallowed than ye olde Chinese takeout and movies, especially if the movies in question are four of the funniest that have traveled down the Borscht Belt in a while. Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein is a must, as is his pseudo-Western, Blazing Saddles — if you relish the occasional bean joke, that is. Ben Stiller's male model Zoolander is a trifle worth viewing for Will Ferrell's Karl Lagerfeld send-up alone. And Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums breathes life into the characters Edward Gorey forgot to create. Oy to the world! (LR)

DJ
Blunted Xmas SF feat. Chad Mitchell and Adam Warped

when: Sat 12.25 (10pm)
where: Anatomy (511 E 6th St, 212.995.8889)
price:  FREE
links: Event Info

Sure, there are a lot of reasons to be in a funk on Christmas: you couldn't get home; or you got home, but the family is beyond dysfunctional; there's never anything good on TV; and so on. However, the standard "there's nothing to do" complaint is where we take issue. At tonight's Blunted Xmas party, San Fran's Chad Mitchell (Roam Recordings) spins quality West Coast house, and former New Yorker Adam Warped returns to dispense another one of his dementedly funky sets. Recent Dallas transplant Benny Fingers and local funk-junkie Scottie B fill out the bill. Happy housey holiday! (CEH)

MUSIC
Daniel Givens, I-Sound, and Secret Frequency Crew

when: Sun 12.26 (8pm)
where: Tonic (107 Norfolk St, 212.358.7501)
price: $10
links: Event Info | Daniel Givens | I-Sound

Armed with a voice that weaves stealthily through other-worldly electronic soundscapes, Daniel Givens' skill with the spoken word is not immediately apparent — it slinks beneath his murmured rhymes and shows itself in the carefully constructed tracks of his latest album on Aesthetics, Dayclear & First Dark. The multi-talented musician/poet/photographer/ producer/Other Music employee headlines a release show at Tonic, with support from To Rococo Rot collaborator I-Sound and a DJ set from Schematic's Secret Frequency Crew. Nothing like a bit of raw, left-of-center conceptual electronics to help digest the remnants of Christmas dinner, eh? (CH)

To what music magazine's compilation did Givens contribute his song "Viaduct"? The first two correct answers each win a pair of tickets to this show.

CITY GEM
Holiday Mondays at the Met

when: Mon 12.27 (9:30am-5:30pm)
where: Metropolitan Museum of Art (1000 5th Ave, 212.535.7710)
price: $12 suggested donation
links: Event Info

Normally closed on Mondays, the Met makes an exception and opens its doors today, when many finally have the time to take a leisurely stroll through its galleries, meet a friend at one of several cafés, or blow their holiday loot at the store. Special exhibits include a stunning show of artifacts from early China; a look at wild, animal-inspired fashions, where both PETA and pelts are displayed; and, for those still in the holiday spirit, a grand, candlelit Christmas tree and Baroque crèche. But it's the permanent collection that continually thrills here, so before bringing in the new, come reflect once more on amazing musical instruments, shining suits of armor, and paintings from all periods. (PL)

Note: Don't miss Duccio's Madonna and Child, a $45 million new acquisition that goes on view this week.

ART
Kerry James Marshall

when: Now through Sun 1.9 (Wed-Fri, Sun: 12-6pm / Sat: 10am-6pm)
where: Studio Museum in Harlem (144 W 125th St, 212.864.4500)
price: $7 suggested donation
links: Event Info | Kerry James Marshall

"The narrative of art history is a competitive event," notes Kerry James Marshall, who, at 49, seems securely positioned as a future art historical figure himself. A former Studio Museum artist-in-residence, Marshall went on to earn a MacArthur Genius award, appearing in both Documenta X and the 1997 Whitney Biennial. Now he returns to his former home with the sweeping One True Thing, an exhibition of his large narrative paintings, along with photographs, sculptures, installations, and videos, as well as pages from his superhero comic book Rythm Mastr. Five years in the making, the diverse array of forms on hand here presents a dialogue between art history and social experience, Old Masters and Black Panthers. (RA)

Note: The museum is closed on Christmas Day.

ART
East Village USA

when: Now through Sat 3.19.05 (Tue-Sat: 12-6pm / Thur: 12-8pm)
where: New Museum of Contemporary Art (583 Broadway, 212.219.1222)
price: $6
links: Event Info

Celebrating the most explosive art scene of the '80s, East Village USA presents an eclectic overview of the postmodern and do-it-yourself styles that were prevalent then and continue to haunt us now. Mixing a wide range of media and ephemera, curator Dan Cameron has compiled a lively vision of the way we were: graffiti-kings Futura 2000, Lee Quinones, and Zephyr are all represented, as are subculture appropriators Basquiat, Haring, and Scharf; Peter Halley, Jeff Koons, and Philip Taaffe look smart, while Jimmy De Sana and Karen Finley seem startlingly surreal. With roughly 180 works by 75 artists, this wild-side walk down memory lane is chock-full of fun. (PL)

Note: Cameron leads a panel discussion about graffiti art on Thur 1.27 (6:30-8pm) and interviews players from back in the day on East Village Radio throughout the run of the show.

FILM
In the Realms of the Unreal

when: Wed 12.22 - Tue 1.4.05
where: Film Forum (209 W Houston St, 212.727.8110)
price: $10
links: Event Info | In the Realms of the Unreal

While the context of Henry Darger's 15,145-page illustrated epic, The Vivian Girls, will soon be lost as the drawings are sold off to private collections, Jessica Yu's documentary In the Realms of the Unreal pieces together aspects of his harsh solitary life and well-constructed fantasy world. Yu, who first broached the connection between mental illness and creativity in The Living Museum, relies on scant personal accounts and Darger's journals rather than art experts and psychologists. Though there are only three photos of Darger, by animating the watercolor scenes, we are a provided a glimpse inside his fascinating mind. (CN)

What city was Darger living in at the time of his death? The fourth correct answer wins a pair of tickets to the 6:30pm show on Mon 12.27.

MUSIC: Upcoming
Slint

when: Tue 3.18.05 & Wed 3.19.05 (8pm)
where: Irving Plaza (17 Irving Pl, 212.777.6800)
price: $25
links: Slint | Tickets

When talent, timing, and innovation intersect, a legend can be formed in as little as 82 minutes. That's how long it takes to play the entire studio output of Slint, a long-defunct band from Kentucky who single-handedly launched the post-rock movement, and whose fragile and introspective songs still astonish a decade later. Having been tapped to curate the All Tomorrow's Parties festival in London this February, the Louisville legends reunite to play a handful of US tour dates. The word "anticipated" can only begin to describe the band's return. (YS)

Note: Tickets have sold out rapidly in other cities, so we recommend purchasing early.

The underground's ascent (or descent, depending on your proclivities) to respectability is secured tonight at Madison Square Garden, as Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, the Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne, and Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein supplant Dick Clark for a New Year's Indie Rockin' Eve. Does Pabst make champagne? (YS)

NYE: DJ

where: 169 Bar (169 E Broadway, 212.473.8866)
price: $40 / $20.05 advance
links: Event Info

The DJ duo of Diplo and Low Budget, aka Hollertronix, bring their eponymous party from Philly to the Big Apple for what is, hands down, the best deal in clubbing for NYE. The pair's raucous mash-up sets bring an excess of crunk, punk, '80s pop hits, dancehall, and grime — and tonight, it's all in the service of gettin' the people dirty-dirty in '05. (JL)

Note: Open bar from 9-11pm.

NYE: Music

price: $30 / $25 advance
links: Event Info

Conceptual art, magazine editing, collaborations with Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore — what can't this fella do? Illbient progenitor DJ Spooky spreads his abstract futurism liberally; a good thing, as he remains one of NYC's most versatile beat theorists. Meanwhile, avant-garde hip-hop collective Dälek drop astute reflections on rap and religion over gritty, industrial soundscapes. Cerebral Def Jukie Rob Sonic opens. (JPC)

Note: $50 extra for open bar all night.

links: Event Info | Marc Ribot

Man-about-downtown Marc Ribot puts on his Latin hat as leader of the group that attacked the oeuvre of seminal Cuban Arsenio Rodriguez, producing two instant classic albums in the process. CD REVIEW: Psapp, Tiger, My Friend
Leaf
Released November 2004
$13.99 (Amazon)

Psapp blend soft vocal hooks with perhaps the most playful approach to making music heard this year. Their sound is unique, but if pushed for a comparison, the duo brings to mind a variation of Stereolab, albeit one that plays with mildly abused garage sale keyboards and uses percussion made from bits and bobs around the house. Glockenspiels and hand-plucked violin add homespun warmth to tunes seemingly sourced from household oddities like BB pellets rattling inside bottles. "Leaving in Coffins," which sounds like Aphex Twin in league with a hired chanteuse, features a childlike melody and syncopated glitches. "Chapter" is decidedly darker and tempered with romantic unrest, featuring thick, standup bass and a frosty vocal delivery. Personable and highly innovative, it's all too easy to forget that Tiger, My Friend is a debut album. (CJN)

ON POINT: Topic Magazine
While loads of rags do theme-oriented issues (day spas! getaways! holiday shopping!), Topic magazine wrings new beauty out of staying on point. Bringing a rigorous, philosophical, and incredibly lucid approach to the art of single-mindedness, each quarterly installment focuses on one subject — the magazine has printed a Prague prostitute writing on "fantasy," a professional skateboarder on "fads," a Nobel laureate on "cities," a lifer on "prison," and a competitive eater on "food."
