DEC 28 - JAN 3

Talk about a crescendo: the week opens with a rant, moves to a more soulful state, inspires almost inexpressible excitement (!!!), and finally arrives at the culmination of 2004, New Year's Eve. The night offers something for everyone: good ol' rock 'n roll, a mash-up smash-up, latin jazz, a kung fu film triple, spiritual awakening, a mini-Madchester, an invigorating sweat, oversexed Canadians, or an unusually funky monkey. Here's to waking up in 2005 wondering what you were thinking. Stock up on aspirin, and spread it...

PERFORMANCE
In a Blue State: Rants, Reflections, and Elegies about 11/2

when: Tue 12.28 (7pm)
where: KGB Bar (85 E 4th St, 212.505.3360)
price:  FREE
links: Event Info

While many New Yorkers would like to forget about the most recent election, a group of writers has gathered together to immortalize — for better or worse — the events of November 2nd. This rant/reading, hosted by poet Carol Rosenfeld and playwright Kathleen Warnock (Drunken! Careening! Writers! series), pulls together scribes from across the US, including Donald Olson (Queer Corners), Dr. Donna Gaines (Teenage Wasteland), Sarah D. Bunting (Thisisnotover.com), and Daniel J. Blau, who reads "Dear John Kerry." Cheryl B., Donna J. Bungo, and Regie Cabico also join the furor. (JA)

FILM
Playtime (1967)

when: Wed 12.29 - Wed 1.5
where: Walter Reade Theater (70 Lincoln Center Plaza, 212.496.3809)
price: $10
links: Event Info

Seven years went into the making of Tativille, the mini-city and genuine star of Jacques Tati's Playtime. Taking the carefully choreographed chaos of urban living — something that every New Yorker can witness, from a less pleasurable perspective, on any given December Sunday in midtown Manhattan — to its illogical but highly comic extreme, Tati wrote, directed, and performed in this graceful day-in-the-life account of a Tomorrowland-esque city. Each detailed frame rewards the observant eye, offering viewers a plethora of sight-gags which inevitably lead to the destruction of many a well-oiled machine. A slice of anarchy served with a wink and a smile. (LG)

What was Jacques Tati's profession before becoming a filmmaker? The fourth and seventh correct answers each win a pair of tickets to a screening of the film.

MUSIC: Rock 'n Roll
Patti Smith

when: Wed 12.29 & Thur 12.30 (8pm)
where: Bowery Ballroom (6 Delancey St, 212.533.2111)
price: $40
links: Event Info | Patti Smith

Although anchored in the quixotic, trembling ecstasies of Arthur Rimbaud and the Beat generation, and informed by the sprawling, sonic swagger of late '60s rock, Patti Smith's artistic vision has always been uniquely personal. Like some strange angel drunk on the tumult of a dying planet, she has sought to infuse pop music with a heightened sense of catharsis while also confronting the everyday anathemas that threaten freedom's fragile hegemony. The first high priestess of punk — and the one who most rapidly outgrew its limitations — Patti and her band are still hugely capable of scalding live performances. (DI)

Note: Patti Smith also performs a special NYE show on Fri 12.31 (9pm), $55.

MUSIC: Neo-soul
Anthony David

when: Wed 12.29 (8pm)
where: S.O.B.'s (204 Varick St, 212.243.4940)
price: $10
links: Event Info | Anthony David

Atlanta soulster Anthony David certainly struck a chord, so to speak, with his first album, 3 Chords & the Truth (Brash), earlier this year. After a successful NYC debut at Joe's Pub, the ex-India.Arie backing vocalist headlines the Black Lily Meets SolVillage neo-soul showcase tonight at S.O.B.'s. Lily was founded by the ladies of Roots collaborators Jazzyfatnastees and has been pivotal in introducing hip R&B crooners to large audiences; SolVillage produces with a similar intent. Arrive early for up-and-coming talent before getting down to the headliner — David's performances make for a showcase all their own. (DB)

Where did the phrase "three chords and the truth" originally come from, and what was being described? The fifth and seventh correct responses each receive a pair of tickets to tonight's show.

MUSIC: Dance-Punk
!!!

when: Thur 12.30 (7:30pm)
where: Mercury Lounge (217 E Houston St, 212.260.4700)
price: $14
links: Event Info | !!!

One of the best, and certainly the most enthusiastic, bands to emerge from the heady disco-punk days of '03, !!! (pronounced "chk chk chk") bring their huge sound to the smallish Mercury Lounge. Eight members strong, the Sacramento transplants have all the bite of their stylistic precursors, with generally twice the manpower. Louden Up Now, !!!'s most recent album, is a compulsively danceable and boundlessly creative exclamation of the band's musical breadth and maturity. Tonight's show should have more bells, hooks, and persuasive arguments for getting down than Gloria Watkins. (JS)

Note: There's also a 10:30pm show tonight, but it's already sold out.

With what cello-wielding band does !!! share multiple members? The tenth correct answer wins a pair of tickets to the early show.

FILM
Short Films from Ariane Michel, Tracey Moffatt, and Saskia Olde Wolbers

when: Thur 12.30 (8:30pm)
where: Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters, MoMA (11 W 53rd St, 212.708.9400)
price: $10
links: Event Info | Ariane Michel | Tracey Moffatt | Saskia Olde Wolbers

From breathless clinches to traded barbs and violent shoot-outs, Tracey Moffatt gives us 21 exhilarating minutes of Love Hollywood-style. Due to an artful selection of clips — the mix contains famous blowups as well as snatches that only Channel 13-aficionados would know — Moffatt and editor Gary Hillberg convey how (disturbingly) interchangeable one era's image of "passion" is with another's. A wild ride while it lasts, Love is nicely complemented by Saskia Olde Wolbers' lower-keyed Placebo. Working against similar strains of vaguely familiar melodrama, Placebo is narrated by a woman who is realizing, in languorous and hazy tones, that her lover has deceived her. (GL)

links: Event Info

price: $37.50-57.50
links: Event Info

The underground's ascent (or descent, depending on your proclivities) to respectability is secured tonight at Madison Square Garden, as Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, the Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne, and Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein supplant Dick Clark for a New Year's Indie Rockin' Eve. Does Pabst make champagne? (YS)

where: 169 Bar (169 E Bway, 212.473.8866)

links: Event Info

The DJ duo of Diplo and Low Budget, aka Hollertronix, bring their eponymous party from Philly to the Big Apple for what is, hands down, the best deal in clubbing for NYE. The pair's raucous mash-up sets bring an excess of crunk, punk, '80s pop hits, dancehall, and grime — and tonight, it's all in the service of gettin' the people dirty-dirty in '05. (JL)

Who was Diplo's partner in mixing the rare AEIOU Vol.2? The fourth and sixth correct answers each win a pair of tickets to tonight's event.

Madchester, Williamsburg is not — but that doesn't mean it can't make one helluvah scene on its own. Delivering the goods tonight, hot sh*t club Supreme Trading hosts an eclectic who's who with live takes from undie rapper Beans and Mommy Daddy, while Richard Fearless, DJ Language, Gordy from Bloc Party, and Blake from Moving Units kick out the jams. (JKG)

when: Fri 12.31 (9pm)
where: Northsix (66 N 6th St, Wburg, 718.599.5103)
price: $35 / $30 advance
links: Event Info

Blending spoken word, klezmer, heavy bass, and funky saxophone, Gogol Bordello manufacture mad, alcohol-fueled, eclectic grooves. Their live shows are a trip, coupling skilled musicianship with crafty irreverence: "I winked at the wolves/they broke out of cages." See this show and dance wildly. (AS)

From whom did Gogol Bordello appropriate the first half of their band name? The second and sixth correct answers each win a pair of tickets to tonight's show.

price: $30
links: Event Info

Turntables on the Hudson steps away from its traditional home at the waterside Frying Pan to rock Crash Mansion for a special New Year's party. DJs Nickodemus and Mariano grace the decks, dropping their sexy, groovy, world beat-influenced blends, while Nappy G kills it on percussion. (BB)

What frequent Nickodemus collaborator shares his name with an Egyptian god? The fourth and seventh correct answers each win a pair of tickets to this event.

NYE: Music
Marc Ribot's Los Cubanos Postizos feat. Joe Bataan

where: Tonic (107 Norfolk St, 212.358.7501)
price: $30 early / $40 late show w/ champagne toast
links: Event Info

Man-about-downtown Marc Ribot puts on his Latin hat as leader of the group that attacked the oeuvre of seminal Cuban Arsenio Rodriguez, producing two instant classic albums in the process. Reunions are rare; a gig with New York salsa-soul pioneer Joe Bataan is practically miraculous — the first time on US soil. (CL)

Note: $60 for both shows.

when: Fri 12.31 (9pm)
where: Rothko (116 Suffolk St, 212.475.7088)
price: $30 / $25 advance
links: Event Info

Conceptual art, magazine editing, collaborations with Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore — what can't this fella do? Illbient progenitor DJ Spooky spreads his abstract futurism liberally; a good thing, as he remains one of NYC's most versatile beat theorists. Meanwhile, avant-garde hip-hop collective Dälek drop astute reflections on rap and religion over gritty, industrial soundscapes. Cerebral Def Jukie Rob Sonic opens. (JPC)

Note: $50 extra for open bar all night.

NYE: DJ
Ghostly's New Year's Bash w/ Todd Osborn and James T. Cotton

when: Fri 12.31 (9pm)
where: Subtonic (107 Norfolk St, 212.358.7501)

If you've any libertines in town visiting from the 18th century, this licentious, burlesque bash should fit them like a well-worn wig — well, maybe without the techno. Art installations including "voyeur video projections" abound, Akim Funk Buddha and a band of acrobats and throat-singers perform, the Nervous Cabaret play, and crack crew of DJs including Heather Hart, Jason Jinx, Billy Belmont, and Jason BK throw down. Lace up your bustier! (JKG)

Who were the original Libertines, and what 16th-century religious figure were they opposed to? The first correct answer wins a pair of tickets to this event.

In its 31st year, the event draws over 150 readers and performers to St. Mark's Church. Today's lineup includes mainstays like Ann Waldman, Lenny Kaye, Eric Bogosian, Penny Arcade, Nick Zedd, and Eileen Myles, in addition to Philip Glass, Reno, Marc Ribot, and Tuli Kupferberg (of Fugs fame). Proceeds go to support the Project, which has provided venues for experimental work since 1966. (GC)

FILM
La Dolce Vita (1960)

when: Sat 1.1 (6:30pm)
where: American Museum of the Moving Image (35th Ave at 36th St, Astoria, 718.784.0077)
price: $10
links: Event Info

Set your alarm for an early date with Fellini's 1960 masterpiece, La Dolce Vita, on the big screen at AMMI. The film that introduced the word "paparazzi" into popular culture examines the seamy underbelly of Rome's glitterati through the eyes of Marcello (Marcello Mastroianni), an ascendant playboy. Inscrutable by turns yet entirely revelatory, the film limns the boundaries of excess with stark, bold, timeless strokes. Perfect fare for remembering your own excess from last night where, hopefully, there were no photogs in tow. (CL)

MUSIC: Southern Rock
Drive-By Truckers

when: Sat 1.1 (9pm)
where: Bowery Ballroom (6 Delancey St, 212.533.2111)
price: $20
links: Event Info | Drive-By Truckers

Drive-By Truckers' magnum opus, 2001's Southern Rock Opera, achieved one of popular music's elusive goals — the fully-realized concept album. In two rollicking discs, the band demystifies Lynyrd Skynyrd's legacy and conjures up some powerfully genuine Southern rock. Since then, acts like Kings of Leon have helped boost the genre's resurgence, but the Truckers' assuredly brilliant songwriting distinguishes them from their peers. The Muscle Shoals, Alabama natives compose gothic tales of the South, illustrating the region's icons and an ominous view of everyday life. Not to mention they, y'know, rock. (JPC)

Note: The Truckers are also performing on New Year's Eve, Fri 12.31 (1am), $35 / $30 advance.

DANCE
Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo

when: Sun 1.2 (7:30pm)
where: The Joyce Theater (175 8th Ave, 212.242.0800)
price: $42
links: Event Info | Les Ballets Trockadero

With their hairy legs and square jawlines, it's easy to dismiss Les Trocks as just another irreverent, all-male transvestite ballet company. That is, of course, before you watch them perform flawless fouettes and multiple pirouettes that would set even Paloma Herrera's heart aflutter. Beneath the tutus and gender-bending kitsch, these are exceptional dancers. Tonight, the company interprets the dreamy ballet La Sylphide and the ornithological tragedy The Dying Swan. (JS)

Note: The ten-performance season, which includes a show on NYE, is divided into two programs. Check the Joyce website for details on specific nights.

What major milestone did Les Trocks celebrate in 2004? The first correct answer receives a pair of tickets to the group's New Year's Eve performance.

SPECTACLE
LVHRD: Come As You Will Be

when: Mon 1.3 (TBA)
where: TBA
price:  FREE

LVHRD is a semi-secret community of cross-disciplinary, arts-oriented urbanites who gather to sip libations, discuss their next projects, and blow off a little steam; the people are hand-picked and worth their weight in hyphens. As if to prove this point LVHRD holds their weekly gatherings on Monday evenings, the weeknight that wins the "Least Likely to Succeed" award every time. Past nights have included a timed fashion-duel and an "striphard" event, where attendees donated unwanted clothing to charity via striptease. Tonight's gathering is an imagined reunion, with everyone dressing as the themselves 30 years from now. The turn of 2005 is the perfect time to start thinking about your future, so put on your Calvin Kleins, hop into your DeLorean, and floor it. (JKG)

Note: You must be a LVHRD member to attend; apply in advance on their website.

THEATRE
Basil Twist's Symphonie Fantastique

when: Now through Sun 1.2 (various times)
where: Dodger Stages (340 W 50th St, 212.239.6200)
price: $25-65
links: Event Info | Basil Twist

Basil Twist's abstract underwater puppet adaptation of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique is as self-explanatory as any abstract underwater puppet adaptation can be: swaths of fabric glide through a gigantic aquarium, controlled by hidden, wet suit-wearing puppeteers harnessed in swings at the top of the tank, as colored lights refract and illumine everything. The effect is ethereal and trippy, which is appropriate since the symphony tells the story of an artist who overdoses after his love goes unrequited. Never before have bitterness, opiates, and a 1,000-gallon tank been put to such good use. (JS)

Note: After the show, join the puppeteers backstage for a Q&A.

Where did Basil Twist train as a puppeteer, and what related honor can he boast? The third and fourth correct answers each win a pair of tickets to a performance of their choice.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Bill Brandt: Nudes

when: Now through Sat 1.8 (Tue-Sat: 11am-6pm)
where: Edwynn Houk Gallery (745 5th Ave, 212.750.7070)
price:  FREE
links: Event Info | Bill Brandt

Though it's become a cliche for photographers to pose the body as a landscape, British artist Bill Brandt was the first to create such mountainous abstractions with the human form. One of the most notable photographers of the 20th century, Brandt trained under Man Ray, whose purist influence can be seen in the strikingly iconic shots on display here. Brandt's oeuvre covered every genre, from surrealist still lifes to brilliantly executed night photography, but his nudes are in a class by themselves. Using a wide-angle lens and dramatic lighting, he revealed the graceful terrain of the body and set the stage for decades of photographic innovation and imitation. (JK)

ART
Comic Grotesque: Wit and Mockery in German Art, 1870-1940

when: Now through Mon 2.14 (Sat-Mon: 11am-6pm / Fri: 11am-9pm)
where: Neue Galerie (1048 5th Ave, 212.628.6200)
price: $10
links: Event Info

Independent curator Pamela Kort's heavily contextualized exhibition explores the important role of grotesque humor in early 20th-century Germanic art and the connections between a lively art scene and the development of cabaret, silent film, and print media. The assembled work speaks for itself, beginning with Swiss symbolist Arnold Bocklin's darkly rendered mythologies and then moving on to Emil Nolde's bizarre alpine postcards and Alfred Kubin's comic escapes into the unreal. Major loans from private and public collections also include vintage cabaret posters, original editions of satirical journals such as Simplicissimus, and projections of Chaplin-esque entertainer Karl Valentin's contorted escapades — ultimately a revelatory, whirlwind tour of an often-obscured era. (AM)

Note: Bring some extra cash and have a taste of the German life at the magisterial Café Sabarsky: Viennese hot chocolate, Bavarian sausage, and apple strudel stand out in a formidable menu.

MULTIMEDIA
Bill Viola: Five Angels for the Millennium

when: Now through Sun 3.6 (Wed-Sat: 11am-6pm / Fri: 1-9pm)
where: Whitney Museum of American Art (945 Madison Ave, 212.570.3676)
price: $12
links: Event Info | Bill Viola

Bill Viola uses state-of-the-art technology to turn galleries into media environments where the viewer is enveloped in sight and sound. His newest installation employs five videos of a man plunging into a pool of water, simultaneously projected onto various walls in a darkened room. Viola manipulates each sequence to create a constant loop of images that oscillate between the undulating serenity of aquatic curls, bubbles, and swells, and the steadily rising and vaguely jarring crash of the plummeting clothed figure. The effect is arresting, evoking feelings, both ominous and meditative, relating to death, transcendence, and renewal. (JR)

How many honorary doctorate degrees has Bill Viola received, and where and when did he get the most recent one? The first correct answer receives a pair of tickets to this show.

CD REVIEW: März, Wir Sind Hier
Karaoke Kalk
Released December 2004
$14.50 (Forced Exposure)

"Marz" means "March" in German, but members Albrecht Kunze and Ekkehard Ehlers are such sentimentalists that their music seems perpetually autumnal. Their last album, Love Streams, opened with a tune built entirely on a sample of Nick Drake's filigreed acoustic guitar, and Wir Sind Hier — whose translated title, "we are here," sounds more existential than prosaic — continues in the same vein, a finely woven basket of guitars, vibraphones, banjos, strings, and glitching laptops, fortified with the steely fibers of minimal house. Songs like "Oktober Im Park" — pure heartbreak in two simple chords — make you wish you knew German, but other tunes, such as the jaunty "The Pop Song," or the upbeat-but-weary "Some Things Do Fall," reward English-speaking listeners. Finally, März's adolescent sense of yearning finds expression in "The River" (available, along with "Blaue Fäden," for free download from the group) promising, "If we return, we will live here forever." Which five artists did Ekkehard Ehlers pay tribute to in a series of solo mini-albums? The fifth, seventh, and ninth correct answers each receive a rare From März with Love tape.

CARRYING EACH OTHER: Tsunami Relief
The numbers alone make up a kind of Harper's Index from Hell: an earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale (the most powerful the world has felt in 40 years) triggered tsunamis traveling as fast as 500 mph, created waves 40 feet tall, moved the receding water line as much as 1000 yards out to sea, traveled 3000 miles, and killed — at last count — upwards of 33,000 people. This horror was lived firsthand yesterday by hundred of thousands, even millions, of coastal dwellers in Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Indonesia, and other parts of Southern Asia. What survivors need now is food, shelter, and medicine — and two organizations make it possible for you to help. Unicef, the United Nations Children's Fund, is supporting regional relief efforts; likewise, the American Red Cross International Response Fund goes to support International Red Cross and Red Crescent relief efforts in the area. STREAMS: East Village Radio
Formed in '03 as a nonprofit group, East Village Radio exists to provide a creative forum for the inhabitants of its neighborhood, as well as greater NYC. Though still wading through bureaucracy to obtain a low-power FM frequency, thanks to online radio streams, the eclectic programming (akin to your favorite college station, but better) can be heard across the world. Highlights from the EVR archives include Italo disco on Cazzo Pazzo, dusty punk rock gems on Dot Dash Radio, and finally, choice dub reggae selections on Mystic Sound. (CJN)
