Cultural Stimuli in NYC
Issue 267: strong-arm flavor

As the cyclists of the Tour de France wend their way to the close of the race's rural route, culminating in a final sprint down the Champs-Élysées, we salute (from our living rooms) the brute athleticism of those willing to kill themselves to live. Every week in NYC is its own cultural odyssey, and this one is no different. You can visit with hippie death cults, endure 58 hours of comedy, experience Aphex Twin's work in a newly orchestrated format, witness Corey Feldman reinterpreting an '80s potboiler, or just settle in for some campfire tales. Hustle over to enter our Flavorpack Contest, live strong, and spread it...

Sooo fast doesn't mean "fast".
Surprised? Well it doesn't. It may sound fast. It may look fast. Man, it may even say "fast". But it's not about being fast. That said, it's not about being slow either. Sooo fast isn't about speed at all. Curious eh? Click for enlightenment.

Libya's mercurial leader, Muammar Qaddafi, is known for a lot of things — but music certainly isn't one of them. However, during the Touareg insurgency against the Malian government, a few nomadic warriors in the Colonel's rebel camps formed a band that they named Tinariwen, meaning "empty spaces." These nationless rebels drew inspiration from their struggles against repression, exploitation, and disenfranchisement, blending traditional and modern elements to create a new style of protest music known as Tishoumaren. Urgent, yet timeless, Tinariwen's music has been banned in Mali, as well as Algeria, to where the Touareg people have been exiled. Let their call to arms rouse your spirit tonight. (SNS/GM)
Note: Tinariwen also performs at Joe's Pub on Wed 7.20.

At last year's Lincoln Center Festival, the Shen Wei Dance Arts company stunned audiences as they leaped, tumbled, and twirled in impossibly precise and athletic contortions across a canvas-covered floor, using hands and feet as paintbrushes. Fusing the traditions of Chinese opera with avant-garde movement and visual art, Shen Wei produces an entirely unique dance form in which East meets West and the cold mathematics of choreographers like Merce Cunningham are ameliorated by a love of performative theatre. Tonight, the troupe offers the world premiere of Map, with music from downtown legend Steve Reich, and introduces NYC to Near the Terrace Part I, a piece inspired by the work of surrealist painter Paul Delvaux. (JKG)
At which Shanghai school did Shen Wei earn a BA in Graphic Design? The first four correct responses each win a pair of tickets to a Shen Wei Dance performance.

Kayrock and Wolfy: One Sixpack Short of a Hippie Death Cult feat. The International Male and Dynasty
|
|
Kayrock and Wolfy's posters and prints, manually silk-screened in their Brooklyn studio, have set the tone for the 21st century's downtown music and party scenes. They've led hipsters to the hottest happenings with a potent blend of street style, post-digital typography, and eclectic images. Currently presenting a special-edition portfolio of 13 archived prints at Jessica Murray Projects, the two have invited a few friends from along the way to play in the gallery space, making new posters for each performance. Tonight, catch booty-rockers the International Male and art-electro duo Dynasty while reliving treasured moments such as Cunts & Company at Siné (2003) (envisioned as a down-home bawdy Bush and crew) and The Last Luxx Poster Ever (2004). (AM)
Note: The exhibition continues through Fri 8.5 (Mon-Fri: 11am-6pm). The Joints and Turducken follow at the gallery space on Wed 7.27, and People of the North, Tiger Mountain, Battle Torn, and Ex Models close out the live series at the Frying Pan on Thur 7.28.

For the series, HERE decks out its space with the comforts of home — all the better to take in so many great performances, from a surreal meditation on Jack Kevorkian (K.), to a poetic exploration of the Internet (Organized Color Intoxication), to a tale of vampires caught in an existential crisis (Destruction). With beards back in and folk experiencing a new revival, we figure the sticks are the new city — which is what makes Rural Route Film's pumped up 2005 programming more essential than ever. Many of the shorts are inspired by songs from our favorite folkies, like Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Joanna Newsom ("The Sprout and the Bean," natch), and Bright Eyes, whose song gets the filmic treatment from Hedwig director Jonathan Cameron Mitchell. In the features category, Jim Jarmusch's classic Dead Man (1995) sees new life, an intriguing 1967 flick formerly titled Miss Jessica is Pregnant is unearthed, and director Katherine Lindberg presents her foray into American gothic, Rain (2001). Weaving tales of mysterious oceanic adventures, Little Odysseys sails into the vast, boundless territory of the sea and its many creative possibilities, as curator Nicelle Beauchene uses hot young art stars to articulate the theme. Amidst the panoply of fresh works, Hernan Bas' intense paintings explore a fragile world of sexual desire and loneliness, underscored by figurative scenes rendered in dreamy washes; Rosson Crow combines a nostalgic interest in bygone times with the overwhelming presence of fractured, colorful modernity; Michael Arcega cleverly illustrates clashing cultural ideas; and Shaun O'Dell's delicate images reveal human complexities wrought with frustration. Come aboard the visual equivalent of a perfect maritime journey. (JF)

Set deep in a Memphis underbelly that's hot as a pickled pepper and twice as seamy, Hustle & Flow is unabashedly formulaic. It's also one of the few films to emerge this year that shows serious heart, which is how it transcended its plot limitations and set so many tongues a-flapping at Sundance. As DJay, a small-time pimp and wannabe rapper facing one doozy of a midlife crisis, Terrence Howard deserves the lion's share of the credit. He conveys his character's queasy ethics and dim wits without condescending or shrinking to them, letting us relax into the surprisingly gratifying rags-to-riches saga. (LR)

As a vanguard of electronic music, Richard D. James (aka Aphex Twin) has entranced a wide range of fans, from braindancing IDM aficionados to avant-garde academics. Tonight, chamber orchestra Alarm Will Sound bridges these two worlds with acoustic interpretations of James' compositions, that are as compositionally compelling as the breathtaking technical and sonic wizardry for which he's known. Having already released an album of AFX works, Acoustica, AWS composer Stefan Freund now premieres a new arrangement, as Alan Pierson conducts, and the Twin's Warp labelmate Richard Devine mixes the ensemble's performance with the artist's original tracks. The results make for an emphatically 21st-century aural experience. (MG)

The '80s strike again with a double whammy: Not only has the boiled-bunny classic Fatal Attraction turned into an Off-Broadway production, but it also stars none other than the decade's favorite Corey, Mr. Feldman himself. The rapid-fire parody incorporates various Greek tragedies and old-fashioned home-etiquette propaganda to tell the story of a corporate lawyer named Michael Douglas who cheats on housewife Anne Archer with working woman Glenn Close. The film's blatant stereotypes are exposed to hilarious effect, replete with kung fu-style action and a rousing rendition of the bathtub scene. Oh, and the bunny still gets poached. (SP)

The figures in Yasumasa Marimura's Three Women, Three Minds blur the distinction between human and inhuman established in Goya's Ruega por ella (Pray for Her).
Roebling Hall artist Yun-Fei Ji and Chelsea School of Art lecturer Ray Smith offer more traditional interpretations, while Madeleine Hatz contributes the textured and abstract Burn, Baby Burn (Asmodea). WORLDWIDE COVERAGE: Health Equity Project |
 |
|
While the G8 leaders debate African aid levels and crunch debt relief numbers from a decidedly macro perspective, it's also worth noting the people doing the actual legwork to address poverty, disease, and the spread of AIDS. The Health Equity Project is a US-based, all-volunteer, nonprofit organization that provides on-the-ground support in developing countries, helping facilitate access to medicine and quality healthcare providers. One of the most innovative initiatives is the group's recently launched healthcare program for sexual minorities, who are often denied treatment. Ghana is currently the test site for the program, which will expand to sub-Saharan Africa with adequate funding. For more information, check the recent BBC World Service story or visit HEP's website. CD REVIEW: Fantômas, Suspended Animation |
 |
|
Ipecac Recordings
Released April 2005
$14.99 (Amazon)
|
From the sound of Suspended Animation, it seems Mike Patton and his Fantômas supergroup have been battling yakuza clowns from outer space. The album's arsenal includes boings and splats from the Acme armory, Speak & Spell samples, steely and impossibly precise riffs from the Melvins' King Buzzo, whip-thrash blast-beats from Slayer's Dave Lombardo, bass and compositional derangement from Mr. Bungle's Trevor Dunn, and of course, the schizoid voice of fellow Bungler Patton himself. Fantômas' M.O. is always high-concept — on S.A., each track corresponds to a day in April, and the CD is packaged in a calendar illustrated by cutesy pop artist Yoshitomo Nara — but Patton remains able to make metalheads and Wire-reading dorks alike drop their shorts.
